DOL Child Labor Laws "Like Using a Sledgehammer To Kill a Mosquito"

April 23, 2012
During a field hearing in Dodge City, Kansas with the House Committee on Agriculture, Nebraska Farmer Zachary Hunnicutt urged committee members to oppose the Department of Labor's proposed rule restricting child labor on the family farm. Mr. Hunnicutt - a fifth-generation farmer - explained that his 4-year-old son is safer in the cab of a tractor than he is on the highway. If the proposed rule by the Department of Labor is enacted, however, such work would be illegal. "I understand...there is labor out there that is being treated badly," Mr. Hunnicutt remarked. "But this goes so far beyond that. This is a 'sledgehammer-to-kill-a-mosquito' kind of idea."
