On March 20, 2012 the House of Representatives approved H.R. 2087, legislation introduced by Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2), to pave the way for Accomack County to expand Wallops Research Park. County officials say development of the Research Park would create hundreds of jobs including immediate construction jobs and long term high-tech jobs for the county, where unemployment hovers near 8% and the most recent census reports that 15.6% of residents live below poverty level. The bill passed 240-164 with bipartisan support and now goes to the Senate for consideration.
