Congressman Mike Turner Questions Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Military Child Custody Rights
July 25, 2012
Servicemembers and their families have made great sacrifices on behalf of our national security and owe it to them to provide every protection within our power.
State courts should not be allowed to use a Servicemember's previous deployments or the possibility of future deployments when making child custody determinations.
Congressman Turner introduced a bill that will amend the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to protect servicemembers against this injustice by providing a uniform national standard.
The language of the bill has passed the House on eight separate occasions:
Six times as part of the National Defense Authorization Act. (FY08/09/10/11/12/13)
Twice as a standalone bill through the Veterans Affairs committee. (H.R.6048, 2008 and HR 4201, 2012)
In May, The House Veterans Affairs Committee unanimously passed the legislation.
The legislation overwhelming passed on the House floor with a 390-2 vote.
