Congressman Terry speaks out against out of control patent lawsuits
December 6, 2013
December 5, 2013. Congressman Terry speaks on the House floor prior to voting in favor of the Innovation Act, which passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.
The Innovation Act puts roadblocks in place to stop abusive and fraudulent patent lawsuits against small businesses. Even with this legislation passed, however, the job is not done. Congressman Terry, as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, will be working on additional measures to curb fraudulent practices by patent trolls. These measures will combat patent troll attempts to abuse the patent system and confuse small businesses into paying for patent infringement using vaguely worded "demand letters" without researching whether these businesses even use their patents.
Chairman Terry will begin his subcommittee's examination of this practice and how to make it stop starting early in 2014.
