On May 8, 2012, the House Veterans Affairs Committee held a hearing examining mental health efforts within the VA. Eric Shinseki, secretary of the VA, attended the hearing and Rep. Gus Bilirakis questioned Shinseki and other witnesses. Bilirakis is Vice Chairman of the Committee.
