Cattle Call: Lummis Amendment to Protect U.S. Nuclear Triad Passes House
July 19, 2012
On Thursday Congressman Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo) joined Congressman Rick Berg (R-ND) in introducing an amendment to protect the U.S. nuclear triad from reductions scheduled under the New START Treaty between the United States and Russia. Wyoming is home to one-hundred and fifty intercontinental ballistic missiles, representing a significant portion of the over 800 strategic nuclear weapons that compose the U.S. nuclear triad. Rep. Lummis' amendment blocks the New START Treaty, which forces the U.S. to reduce its arsenal while still allowing Russia to develop and deploy more nuclear weapons than current levels. The amendment passed by a vote of 232 to 183.
