House Passes Bill to Support Families of Fallen Soldiers
October 9, 2013
U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) made the following comments in support of providing the full death benefits to families of fallen troops during the government shutdown. The House passed unanimously the H.J.Res.91, Honoring the Families of Fallen Soldiers Act which will provide immediate funding for the families of heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. In urging the Senate and White House to join the House in supporting this measure, Rep. Miller made the following statement:
"It is unconscionable that the funds for burial benefits usually sent to the family members of our fallen heroes have been blocked. The Pay Our Military Act was passed by both the House and the Senate, and signed into law by the President in order to provide an appropriation of funds for the pay and allowances of members of our armed forces, including our National Guard, our defense civilians and contractors. It was the absolute intent of this legislation to include the funds to be paid to the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our country. However, the House has taken further action today by passing a bill to guarantee that our government act immediately to deliver these burial benefits. The welfare of the members of our armed forces and their families are and will always remain the top priority of our nation. Let us not delay, we call on the Senate to swiftly pass this measure and send it immediately to the White House for the President to sign into law."
