WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) issued the following statement today regarding the 2012 Medicare Trustees report released this afternoon which asserts that the program’s deficits are permanent and reform is needed to make the program sustainable.
“Today’s report confirms that Medicare is still on a direct path to bankruptcy in 2024 and the Democrat plan to do nothing and ignore the problem will not save this important program’s solvency. Only the House Republican budget addresses this crisis and provides the urgent solutions needed to save and strengthen Medicare.
“The president was right when he said that ‘nothing comes close’ to driving our debt crisis as ‘our long-term liabilities … Medicare and Medicaid and our health care spending.’ Unfortunately, that didn’t stop Democrats from cutting half a trillion dollars from Medicare in order to fund another unsustainable entitlement in the president’s health care law.
“House Republicans have carved the bold path that must be taken in order to preserve our nation’s health and retirement promises to our children and grandchildren. It’s time for the president and his party to follow our lead and demonstrate the courage and responsibility expected of them by the American people.”
