WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas) issued the following statement today regarding the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act, which would effectively stop the 2007 government-ordered ban on traditional incandescent lighting.
“There are things that government should do, and things that government should not do. Telling Americans which basic household necessities they can and cannot buy is something it should never do. When Washington tries to over-regulate by telling Americans what kind of light bulbs they have to use, it costs consumers more of their hard-earned money and it costs the economy more manufacturing jobs that we can’t afford to lose.
“The ideas of Thomas Jefferson still ought to apply to the innovations of Thomas Edison. The traditional light bulb is safe, affordable, and reliable, and American consumers should still have the liberty to pick whatever light bulb they want at the lowest price available. We’re facing a devastating debt and jobs crisis, so why is the government wasting time forcing people to buy new light bulbs at higher costs? It shouldn’t, and the BULB Act will ensure it doesn’t.”
