“Many graduates, like I was, are the first in their family to graduate from college – eager to get that first job, begin their careers, and pay off their student loans. But one thing stands in their way: a stagnant job market.”
Republican Leadership Press Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a House Republican press conference today, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) discussed the best way to pay off student loans, which is with a good-paying job. Additionally, the Congresswoman highlighted the pro-jobs policies House Republicans are advancing to create jobs and opportunities for students in Eastern Washington and across the country.

Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:
“As we approach summer, students all across this country are finishing school, receiving their diplomas, and graduating from college. Many of them, like I was, are the first in their family to graduate from college – eager to get that first job, begin their careers, and pay off their student loans. But one thing stands in their way: a stagnant job market.
“It’s a job market in which less than half of all college graduates have found a full-time job. Forty-four percent are underemployed, taking jobs that don’t require a college degree, pay poorly, and are only part-time. And it is sad – given how hard students work to earn their college degrees – that the percentage of young adults in the workforce is at its lowest level since 1972. But the best way for students to pay off their loans is with a good-paying job.
“We’ve all sat down with college students in our home towns. We’ve listened to what’s on their minds – and time and time again, their number one concern is how they’re going to find a job after they graduate. That is what they care about. So let’s come together – the White House and Congress, Republicans and Democrats, and enact those policies that will get all Americans back to work. For college graduates, it all starts with that first job. So let’s give them that opportunity.”
