“Let’s leave our kids a better America – one where everyone has the ability to succeed.”
Chair McMorris Rodgers
Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:
“Today I’d like to talk about the America where I grew up. It was an America in which anyone – even an Eastern Washington farm girl like me, who worked at the McDonald’s Drive-Thru to pay for college – could achieve bigger and better things. It was the most innovative and competitive nation in the world, one where hard work was rewarded with the promise of a better life. For my kids and yours, that is the America we want to get back.
“But when 800,000 people have dropped out of the workforce last month alone – and when nearly 4 million Americans have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more – it’s clear the current path is not working. In the last five years, we’ve learned one thing: higher taxes and more spending leads to few jobs and less opportunity.
“We’ve seen it with our own eyes – in all the people back home discouraged because they still can’t find jobs; in the moms and dads who are struggling to support their kids; and in the millions of Americans worried they won’t be able to pay the bills at the end of the month. We can do better than this. We owe it to our kids to do better than this.
“House Republican have already passed dozens of jobs bills. Now we simply ask the Senate to join us – just like they did on the SKILLS Act – to find more opportunities to help get people back to work. Let’s leave our kids with the America our parents gave to us – one in which every single person in this country has the opportunity to succeed.”
