WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Louisiana Congressman Bill Cassidy made the following statement after signing a Discharge Petition to force a vote on H.R. 391, a bill that would block the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision to regulate carbon-dioxide emissions:
"Regulations resulting from the EPA's decision will leave American companies at a competitive disadvantage in the global economy, putting countless jobs at risk. Rather than complying with burdensome EPA regulations in America, businesses will simply move overseas. The EPA's decision will not reduce global carbon-dioxide emissions, but it will reduce employment in America."
"It appears the Administration is more interested in making friends in Copenhagen than creating jobs in the United States."
Background
Monday, the EPA released an endangerment finding, which states that carbon dioxide emissions, "threaten the public health and welfare of the American people." The decision paves the way for EPA to regulate carbon dioxide, which is emitted any time carbon-based fuels are burned. As the Associated Press reported, the decision was, "clearly was timed to add to the momentum toward some sort of agreement on climate change at the Copenhagen conference..."
The Discharge Petition is a rare procedural maneuver, which, when signed by a majority of the House, will force a vote on a bill the Speaker has refused to bring up for consideration. H.R. 391 is co-sponsored by 96 Members of the House, including Cassidy. So far, 98 Members have signed the Discharge Petition to bring H.R. 391 to the floor.
