Washington D.C. - Today, Science and Technology (S&T) Committee Ranking Member Ralph Hall (R-TX), Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee Ranking Member Paul Broun (R-GA) and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Ranking Member Bob Inglis (R-SC) sent a letter to Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN), requesting a formal investigation of the emails recently leaked by the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit (CRU). The S&T Committee has jurisdiction over federally-funded climate research.
CRU is one of the primary repositories of climate change data relied on by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the leaked emails show numerous federal scientists and recipients of federal research grants involved in various inappropriate activities.
"The scientific community enjoys a tremendous amount of public trust," the lawmakers wrote. "Unfortunately, the themes exposed in the CRU documents led to a loss of confidence in certain individuals as dispassionate arbiters of climate science."
The letter continues, "The importance of these underlying issues being addressed is far-reaching and will impact the lives of every American. Accordingly, we welcome any consultation with the majority in proceeding with this matter."
