Abu Zubaydah

May 5, 2009
  • In November 2001, Zubaydah helped smuggle now-deceased al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu al-Zarqawi and some 70 Arab fighters from Kandahar, Afghanistan into Iran.

  • At the time of his capture, Zubaydah was trying to organize a terrorist attack in Israel and he had enlisted the help of al-Zarqawi in finding a smuggling route into Israel for moving persons and materials.

  • Leading extremist facilitator recruited by Osama bin Laden to be one of al-Qaeda's senior travel facilitators following Zubaydah's success in 1996 at securing safe passage of al-Qaeda members returning from Sudan to Afghanistan.

  • Received $50,000 from Saudi donors and passed to al-Qaeda's senior leadership - money that may have funded the 9/11 attacks.

  • Oversaw the "Khaldeen group" training camp and guesthouses between 1995 and 2000. These camps were used to train three of the 9/11 hijackers.
