Davis: Setting A Responsible Budget for Our Future

Creating a responsible budget is essential for any successful business or cost-conscious family.  For generations, parents have worked and lived within their means to provide a better future for their children.  While American families balance their budgets month to month and year to year, so far this year, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has failed to do the same.
 
Nearly one month has passed since the April 15th deadline set by the Congressional Budget Act of 1974 and still no committee or floor action is scheduled for a budget resolution in the House of Representatives.  I have urged Speaker Pelosi to pass a budget resolution that would put an end to out-of-control spending.

In 2006, Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-S.C.) said “If you can’t budget, you can’t govern.”  Four years later and in the Majority party, Chairman Spratt now says his party can control the spending with or without a budget resolution.  Haphazardly spending money as we go along is irresponsible with over $12.9 trillion in debt.  If Speaker Pelosi and Chairman Spratt do not to pass a budget, it will be the first time that the House has failed to do so in more than thirty-five years.
