Cassidy: ‘Freeze' One of Many Steps Needed to Cut Debt

Rep. Bill Cassidy (LA) made the following statement:

If this is a serious reversal of the Administration's policies and they are serious about cutting spending and cutting the debt, then it is a welcome first step. But this is just one of many steps the Administration must take to undo the fiscal havoc it created in its first year and begin to solve the mess it inherited.”

Non-defense discretionary spending has increased by 85% since the President took office, so holding spending at that level is more like a lukewarming than a freeze.”

That said, we should give some credit where credit is due.  Spending restraint of any sort is frowned upon within the President’s party.  His leadership on this issue is pivotal to tempering the profligacy of Congressional Democrats.  The question now is whether he’s willing to put his veto pen where his mouth is.
