H.Res. 1583 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage.  The legislation was introduced by Rep. Charles Boustany (R-LA) on July 30, 2010.

H.Res. 1583 would resolve that the House of Representatives:

• “Expresses its support to the victims of Hurricane Rita;
• “Commends the courageous efforts of those who assisted in the recovery progress;
• “Recognizes the contributions of the communities in Louisiana and Texas to the United States; and
• “Reaffirms its commitment to rebuild, renew, and restore the Gulf Coast region.”

 

According to the resolution’s findings, on September 24, 2005, Hurricane Rita made landfall just east of the Texas-Louisiana border, between Sabine Pass and Johnson's Bayou, as a Category 3 hurricane with wind speeds of 120 mph and further devastated the Gulf Coast.
