H.R. 4862 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Jose Serrano (D-NY) on March 16, 2009.

H.R. 4862 would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to allow a Member of Congress, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner to administer the oath of renunciation and allegiance to applicants for naturalization.

Currently, an officer of the court administers the Oath of Allegiance. For more information on the Naturalization Oath process, see this U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services website.

The Congressional Budget Office has not produced a cost estimate for H.R. 4862 as of press time.
