H.Res. 679 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Monday, September 15, 2009, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. The resolution was introduced by Rep. Deborah Halvorson (D-IN) on July 24, 2009.

H.Res. 679 would resolve that the House of Representatives:
• "Supports the goals and ideals of American Legion Day; and
• "Calls upon the people of the United States to observe American Legion Day with appropriate programs and activities."

According to the resolution's findings, legionnaires believe a veteran's service to the United States goes on long after the veteran is discharged from the Armed Forces; and many Americans recognize September 16 of each year as American Legion Day.
