H.Res. 650 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. The resolution was introduced by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) on July 15, 2009.
H.Res. 650 would resolve that the House of Representatives:
• "Declares country music to be a uniquely American art form; and
• "Recognizes that country music should be honored for its contributions to American life and culture."
According to the resolution's findings, country music was created in the United States and country music is rooted in the folk traditions of the British Isles. Those roots became entangled with the ethnic music of immigrants from other regions and African slaves to create a uniquely American sound.
