H.Res. 382 is being considered on the floor under suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage. This legislation was introduced by Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) on March 30, 2009.
H.Res. 382 resolves that the House of Representatives:
• "supports the goals and ideals of the 10th annual National Charter Schools Week;
• "acknowledges and commends charter schools and their students, parents, teachers, and administrators across the United States for their ongoing contributions to education and improving and strengthening our public school system; and
• "calls on the people of the United States to conduct appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities to demonstrate support for charter schools during this weeklong celebration in communities throughout the United States."
Charter schools receive waivers from public school districts in exchange for promising better academic results, and have been shown to provide high-quality educations for students. Currently, 4,700 charter schools are serving approximately 1,400,000 children across the country. Furthermore, charter schools nationwide are successfully serving a higher percentage of low-income and minority students than the traditional public system.
