H.Res. 153 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House under a motion to suspend the rules on March 3, 2009.  This resolution was introduced by Representative Diane Watson (D-CA) on February 10, 2009, and referred to the Committee on Education and Labor, which took no further action.

H.Res. 153 would resolve that the House of Representatives:

  • "Commends the University of Southern California (USC) Trojan football team and USC President Steven B. Sample for USC's victory in the 2009 Rose Bowl;
  • "Applauds Coach Pete Carroll for his leadership not only on the football field, but also in the community; and
  • "Recognizes the achievements of the players, coaches, students, alumni, and staff who were instrumental in helping the University of Southern California win the Rose Bowl."

On January 1, 2009, the USC Trojans defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions 38-24 to win a record 24th Rose Bowl.  With the win, USC capped a historic 2008 season which saw the Trojan's achieve their seventh straight top five finish and earn an unprecedented seventh consecutive Bowl Championship Series (BCS) appearance.  USC has now appeared in a record-tying four consecutive Rose Bowl games and is now tied with the record for the most bowl victories of all time.
