H.Res. 146 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House under a motion to suspend the rules on March 3, 2009.  This resolution was introduced by Representative Betsy Markey (D-CO) on February 10, 2009, and referred to the Committee on Education and Labor, which took no further action.

H.Res. 146 would resolve that the House of Representatives:

  • "Honors Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, for his success in encouraging children to discover the joy of reading;
  •  "Honors the 12th anniversary of Read Across America Day;
  •  "Encourages parents to read with their children for at least 30 minutes on Read Across America Day in honor of the commitment of the House of Representatives to building a Nation of readers; and
  • "Encourages the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities."

According to findings listed in the resolution, more than 50 national reading organizations have partnered with the National Education Associate (NEA) to utilize March 2, 2009, as a day to celebrate reading and the birth of Theodor Geisel-better known as Dr. Seuss.  Each of the last 12 years, the NEA has sponsored the Read Across America Program, which focuses on encouraging and motivating children to read.  The 2009 Read Across America Program will focus on encouraging children and families to read the works of Dr. Seuss.
