H.R. 1824 is being considered under suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) on March 31, 2009.

H.R. 1824 would authorize the Department of Education to award grants to and/or enter into cooperative agreements with Best Buddies-a social and recreational program for Americans with intellectual disabilities-to expand the program's activities and increase social and community participation for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The legislation prohibits the funding authorized from being used for direct medical treatment and imposes other restrictions on grant recipients.

A formal Congressional Budget Office was not available at press time; however, the bill would authorize $10 million in Fiscal Year 2010, and "such sums" as necessary for the four subsequent Fiscal Years.
